December 2010

November rocked as well, and was odd because it started out super sunny and warm, and slowly dipped down into the expected winter chill. It snowed a couple of times but very lightly and it was too warm to stick. So unlike last year, which as you may recall, had snow on my birthday, this year is quite mild.

To celebrate our 2nd anniversary, we went to The Melting Pot (fondue restaurant) with our friends Heather and Derek who were celebrating their 1st anniversary:

Our Anniversary Celebration

Our next adventure was getting on a plane...no, not a commercial airplane, but a small Mooney 4-seater! A friend of ours is a licensed pilot and flight instructor and for months he's been offering to take us up in the plane. Well, I finally got off my duff and arranged it, and the timing was absolutely perfect. We went flying on an irregularly warm Saturday morning in November--it was around 80 degrees!

Flying with Vance

First we got the tour of the plane, and everything I learned in my Flight Without Fear class came back to me about how the plane works. Then we taxied it out of the hangar, got in, and I assisted with the pre-flight checklist. Every dial and gauge was explained to me as well--our friend Vance knew that I wanted to do this because of my former fear of flying, so he made the experience as informative and relaxing as possible.

And then we were off! Among hot air balloons, other planes, and skydivers, we cruised around the area for a few hours. We went over Boulder, towards the Rockies...

Flying over Boulder

...we cruised over Erie and found our house, went north approaching Fort Collins, and over Berthoud which has these hills that are notoriously windy, where there were a few small bumps of turbulence but nothing to get me concerned. All in all I was extremely relaxed--it almost didn't feel like an airplane!

We landed, refueled, and then JC got to sit in the front seat with Vance and actually got a bit of a free flying lesson! JC did the takeoff and most of the flight all by himself! He did a great job and has always wanted to learn how to fly so this was his first taste of actually doing it.

It was actually a really cool experience to be able to do that, and Vance is always willing to take us flying again. We could even fly up to another town, have lunch, and fly back, how cool would that be!?

For my 35th birthday I was treated to an AWESOME concert the night before. One of our favourite bands finally came back to town--COMBICHRIST! They are an industrial/techno/EBM band from Finland, and we've been waiting for this show for a couple of years. They were supposed to come to Denver last year but due to a huge blizzard at the end of October on the very day they were scheduled to play, they had to cancel. Even their opening act, Aesthetic Perfection, was amazing!!

The following weekend we went to see the comedian John Oliver in Denver and of course, he was very, very funny. For Thanksgiving, we had a calm, relaxing holiday with JC's parents and nephew. We had an early dinner, played video games and watched a movie. Then JC and I went home and watched football. Now THAT'S my kind of holiday!

And so, I am closing with pics of my neighbor's annual Halloween display. This year it was aliens. He had rotating lights inside of the green domes on the underside of the spacecraft, and smoke coming out every now and then. And of course he had alien-themed music playing. We love our neighbors. :)

Halloween Aliens

and of course no display is complete without an alien autopsy...wait...what???
